Traditional furniture is a glimpse of our history. All furniture is produced to fulfil a purpose, as it is now so it has always been. However, technology is forever nudging us along the road of progress, and things designed for the needs of the day can suddenly become redundant. The nightstand, the dumbwaiter, the fire screen, these and many other items are victims of changing times or technology. Today we are watching the demise of the bureau, the writing table, and even to a large degree, the desk.
Electronic communication is overtaking the physical art of letter writing, making it unnecessary to give space to items designed to assist that art. Traditional furniture lives on with those who love the style, who enjoy the sense of history that is inbuilt in each piece, or are in awe of the uncommon skill of the past craftsmen who created such beautiful items, often using primitive tools. The likes of Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton, though currently out of favour, will not disappear. They will be back!
