Originally the 'liming' of timber was a practical finish. It was first introduced as a protective measure to discourage attacks on furniture by insects and worm. It quickly established itself as a desirable decorative finish, and today that is seen as its primary function.
Though traditionally a white paste, some interesting effects can be obtained by the introduction of a touch of colour. The timber should ideally be of an open grain type.
