The designs of display cases and bookcases, originally owned only by those most wealthy in the land, (they being the only ones with any use for books) would have been large and ornate, made to impress as much as function. Not until more of the population became educated and wealthy enough to own books or china, did the bookcase and display case become more simplified and affordable.
