| Originally no more than wall brackets, they later became large enough to need a front leg, or legs, for support. These legs would have been quite ornate on some, with gilding or carving. Eventually, the addition of very simple back legs evolved them into tables, which could be moved to various locations about the house. The legs soon became uniform in finish. |
